VBS!

I’d never heard of Vacation Bible School until I came to Virginia.  In the small town I grew up in in upstate N.Y. we never had such a thing.  Let me tell you friends, those folks up north don’t know what they are missing! Vacation Bible School has to be one of the highlights of our church year here at Wright’s Chapel.  It has grown from when we first started almost 25 years ago and we now have kids coming out of everywhere. It is so much fun.  I’m looking forward to this coming week as we are focused on some of the unlikely heroes of our faith from the Old Testament.  There is a job for everybody at Vacation Bible school.  Maybe you’ll work in the market place helping children complete a craft.  Maybe you’ll be a family leader helping children to navigated from one place to another. Maybe you’ll be in music or outside in recreation. Maybe you be assigned to just one child and help them experience the fun of the week. My job is to try and help make the Bible stories come alive through drama and I love it when there are some great characters like David and Moses and Daniel to talk about.  This week our young people will experience David slaying Goliath, Moses parting the sea, Daniel making friends with the lions. I’m excited about trying to find ways to bring those stories to life. The great stories of scripture are foundational to our faith in God and my hope is that the fun of the dramas will help to stick those Bible stories in our children’s minds for a long  long time.  The other thing that is so fun about Vacation Bible School is just working with so many people.  There is a lot of laughter and joy that comes from being together both for our children and our adult volunteers.  I hope you’ll plan to come by this week during the evening. I hope you’ll encourage your child, grandchild, neighbor’s child, friends child to come and have a week of fun while grounding them in faith in God.  If you’ve never been here before, you don’t know what you’re missing!
