Wright’s Chapel goes to the prom
I’ll be so glad when the rain finally stops, the sun comes out, and the flowers start to bloom. In my life it feels like February has been filled with sickness and rain, and it has been a dreary gray month. My wife would say that my mood and attitude has followed the weather, dreary and drab. I know she’s right, but spring is in the air and with spring comes new life. Spring brings March Madness. Spring brings baseball. Spring brings short sleeves and shorts and tennis and bike rides and evening walks. In the spring Amy and I dust off our screened-in porch and enjoy sitting out in the evening. Spring brings a new hope and a fresh new start. Another sign of spring is that school proms are also right around the corner. We love a spring dance at Wright’s Chapel.
I’m excited for our ministry called Cinderella’s Closet which will take place on March 10th. On that Saturday morning, there will be dozens of high school young women here at Wright’s Chapel trying on prom dresses. We took over this ministry from a church last year who after several years had just grown weary. It’s a lot of work, but you can see the glow in a young girl’s eye as she puts on a beautiful dress. You see the smile on mom and dad’s face when they realize that the dress is free. Yes, we give the dresses away in order to help these young women experience their prom. Not all, but some of these young girls wouldn’t experience their prom without the help of Cinderella’s Closet. Last year, two of the young women who came here with their mother had recently moved into a battered women’s shelter north of us. Weeks earlier, they had fled their home with nothing. Being able to go to their school prom just provided, at least for the moment, a sense of normalcy in their lives.
On March 16th here at Wright’s Chapel we are partnering with the Caroline High School Honor Society to help host the second annual “Special Needs” dance for our community students. What a ball we had last year here at our church! I know my daughter Sophia had the time of her life, as did several other special needs students from our church and the high school. The honor society students do most of the prep work. We simply provide the space so that there can be dinner, music, dancing, and a great time for a group of students who don’t always get the opportunity to let loose and just have fun with their friends and to make new ones. It will be a western theme this year; a hoedown at Wright’s Chapel. If you know a student with special needs in 6th -12th grade who might like to join in this fun event, email Amy at atillapaugh@ccps.us. A parent or guardian will need to attend the event with them, but I guarantee you, they’ll have a great time too!
Spring is right around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I am ready to dance!
