Luke 7:31-35
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Just the other week I had someone in the office to help me with the various jobs. I told them the task I wanted them to take care of so I could move on to other things that needed my attention. The whole time they were working there I was standing right over their shoulder, watching everything and correcting everything they attempted to do. It wasn’t that they were doing anything wrong, it was the fact they were not doing it the way I wanted it done. The way I felt is should be done. Let’s be blunt, they weren’t doing it my way, “The RIGHT way”. I spent so much time trying to make them conform to my way that I accomplished none of the task I had laid out for myself.
I think what Jesus is trying to tell us is just that, that we need to focus more on the task that God has ask of us. It is so easy to see what others are doing wrong, to judge them by our standards. To see “the splinter in their eye, but not the log in our own.”
Dear Heavenly Father, We come to you today asking for your forgiveness and mercy. Forgive us for setting standards on others while all along not living up to the standards you have set for us. Teach us to be more child-like, so that we see the beauty in all of your creations, and less childish by wanting everything our way. Amen
